How to Focus on Studying (When Your Brain Will Not Cooperate)
Focus is less about willpower than about what the session is made of. Two changes — self-testing and phone distance — do most of the work.

The fastest way to focus while studying is to change what the session is made of rather than how hard you try: replace re-reading with attempts to recall, and put your phone in a different room. Both are small mechanical changes, both are supported by experimental evidence, and both work against the strong instinct that the comfortable study method is the effective one.
That instinct is the real problem. Most people who say they cannot focus are actually doing a task that gives no feedback — reading the same page while thinking about something else — and then blaming their attention for a problem the task created.
The thing that feels productive is the thing that fails
In 2006, Roediger and Karpicke ran an experiment that has been repeated in various forms ever since. Students read short prose passages and then spent the same total amount of time in one of three ways: reading it four times; reading it three times and taking one recall test; or reading it once and taking three recall tests.
Then everyone was tested a week later.
The students who read the passage four times recalled 40% of it a week later. Those who read three times and tested once recalled 56%. Those who read once and tested three times recalled 61%.
Now the part that explains why almost nobody does this. On a test taken five minutes after studying, the order reversed: the four-times readers scored 83%, the three-tests group only 71%. Re-reading wins in the moment and loses in the week. So the method that feels like it is working is the method you can feel working — right then, briefly — and it is the weaker one for anything you have to know later.
This is one experiment with university students and short prose passages, so don't over-extend it. But the direction has held up across a large amount of subsequent work: retrieving information is a stronger learning event than reviewing it.
Why this is a focus problem, not just a study-technique problem
Re-reading is passive, and passive tasks are where attention goes to die. There is nothing to fail at, no moment where you find out you don't know something, no point at which your brain is required to do anything effortful. You can read three pages while thinking about something else entirely and only notice at the bottom.
Recall is the opposite. Closing the book and writing down what you remember produces immediate, uncomfortable feedback: here is what I have, here is the hole. It is harder to drift, because drifting is instantly visible.
So "I can't focus" and "I'm re-reading" are frequently the same sentence said twice. Change the task and the attention problem partly solves itself.
The phone does not have to be picked up to cost you
The second change is about where your phone is, and the evidence here is more specific than the usual advice implies.
Ward, Duke, Gneezy and Bos ran a study published in 2017 in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research with 520 undergraduates. Everyone did the same cognitive tasks — a working-memory measure and a fluid-intelligence measure — with their phone in one of three places: face down on the desk, in a pocket or bag, or in another room.
Phone location had a significant effect on performance, with a linear trend running desk → pocket/bag → other room. The "other room" group outperformed the "desk" group. In a second experiment with 275 students, the effect held whether the phone was switched on or off.
Note what that means and what it doesn't. Nobody was using their phone. It was face down, and in one condition powered off. The cost came from it being there, and from the ongoing effort of not attending to it. This is why "I'll just leave it face down and ignore it" is a worse plan than it feels like — you are paying for the ignoring.
The instruction that follows is annoyingly simple: another room. Not face down, not in a drawer at arm's reach. A different room, for a defined block, after which you go and get it.
A study hour that actually works
Concrete version, for a single hour.
Decide the finish line first. Not "revise chapter four" but "be able to explain the three mechanisms in chapter four without looking." A session with a defined end has something to focus toward.
Phone in another room. Set the timer on something else — a clock, a laptop, a kitchen timer.
Read once, actively. One pass, at normal speed. You are not trying to absorb it; you are finding out what is in it.
Close the book and write down everything you can recall. Blank page. Ten minutes. This will feel bad and it is the part that works.
Open the book and mark what you missed. Not what you got wrong — what you didn't produce at all. That is your actual list.
Re-study only the gaps, then close and recall again. Two rounds is usually enough for one sitting.
Come back to the same material two days later and recall it cold before looking at anything. Spacing the attempts across days is what makes them stick past the week.
Total re-reading in that hour: one pass. Total recall attempts: two or three. That ratio is roughly the inverse of how most people study, and it is the whole change.
What to do when you have lost the thread
Interruptions are inevitable. What matters is what happens next.
The common failure is treating the interruption as the end of the session — you break for a moment, pick up the phone, and the hour is gone. A more useful habit is to have a fixed re-entry move: read the last thing you wrote, not the last thing you read. Your own handwriting is a faster way back into your own thinking than the textbook is.
And if focus is genuinely not available today, a shorter honest session beats a long dishonest one. Twenty-five minutes of recall practice with the phone in the hall is worth more than three hours of sitting near an open book.

Q: Why can't I focus when I study, even when I want to? A: Very often the task itself is the problem rather than your attention. Re-reading and highlighting give no feedback, so nothing in the activity pulls you back when your mind wanders, and you can complete pages of it while thinking about something else. Switching to active recall — closing the material and writing what you remember — makes drifting immediately obvious and gives the session something to push against. Environment matters too: research on smartphone presence found measurable costs from the phone simply being in the room.
Q: Does highlighting help at all? A: It helps you find things again, which is a real but modest benefit. What it doesn't do is create the retrieval event that makes material stick, because recognising a highlighted sentence is much easier than producing it from nothing. If you highlight, treat it as bookmarking rather than as studying, and follow it with a closed-book recall attempt.
Q: How long should a study session be? A: Long enough to include at least one full read and one recall attempt, which for most material is somewhere between twenty-five and fifty minutes. Beyond that, quality tends to fall before the clock does. Two separate sessions on different days will nearly always beat one session of the same total length, because spacing the attempts is part of what makes them work.
Q: Is it really necessary to put my phone in another room? A: In the 2017 study on smartphone presence, participants who left their phones in another room outperformed those with phones face down on the desk, and the effect held even when the phone was switched off. Nobody in the study was using their phone. So "face down and ignored" is not the same as "absent" — the ignoring itself has a cost. If another room isn't possible, the furthest you can put it is better than the nearest.
Q: What if I go blank when I try to recall something? A: That is the technique working, not failing. A blank is information: it tells you exactly which part you didn't actually learn, which re-reading would have hidden from you. Write down what you do have, mark the gap, look it up, close the book and try the same recall again. The discomfort of the blank is what the method is trading for retention a week later.
Q: Does any of this apply to subjects that are mostly problems, like maths? A: Yes, with a translation. The equivalent of closed-book recall is doing problems without the worked example in front of you, then checking. Re-reading a solved example is the maths version of re-reading a chapter: it feels like understanding, and it doesn't test whether you can produce the steps yourself. A: Focus is affected by a long list of ordinary things — sleep, food, how much is on your mind, how noisy the room is, whether the material is genuinely too hard right now. Start by changing one of those rather than trying harder at the same setup.
